Artist's Statement - Dianne McLean
I completed my Diploma in Fine Art, specialising in painting in the late 60's and went on to complete a full time Ceramics Certificate course in the early 70's.
In 1973, I was given a job at Brookvale TAFE as Teacher in Charge of Ceramics. My creative endeavours for the next 27 years involved teaching and working sculpturally with clay.
After retirement from teaching in 2000, I worked on developing surface treatments for my sculptural pieces and began drawing more intensively. Currently I have returned to painting.
In both two-dimensional and three-dimensional work, I tend towards abstraction. However, more often than not the subject and connected forms are important in my work.
My work is not about narrative, nor does it depict a specific subject in front of me, such as a landscape or still life. Rather, I attempt, through visual means, to express the 'essence' or 'substance' of ideas and concepts.
My approach is more intuitive than intellectual and the work can be 'read' on various levels, perhaps some I have not considered.
Everyone will respond according to their own experiences and perceptions.
