JOHN ELLISON

Artist's Statement - John Ellison

I paint to try to express some of the wonder, joy and amazement I feel in being alive. The fact that I am here to witness a rock, a hill, a tree, a woman's neck is extraordinary.

Art is a discipline; a way of being in the world; a continuous process of cleansing the windows of perception in order to see the world anew. Apart from all that, it is the greatest fun. Who else has permission to just wander around staring at things - a sort of professional voyeur? Best job in the world.

John has been painting and teaching art in the Blue Mountains for thirty years. John began the Winter Magic Festival in 1994 whilst working as the Cultural Development Officer for Blue Mountains Council. The festival, now in its sixteenth year has grown to be one of the major festivals in Australia. John wrote a draft Cultural Plan for the mountains, and during his time as the Cultural Officer, the Blue Mountains was desgnated as the Inaugural City of the Arts, by the incoming Carr Labor Government.

He is passionate in his belief that creativity is a central component in a balanced and meaningful life. John's work is eagerly sought and held in many collections.
